Notable geographical features include the lofty Mt Kaputar National Park to the east, the vast black soil plain to the west and the 1 million acre Pilliga Scrub to the south. The Pilliga Scrub (part of which is in the Pilliga Nature Reserve) is a form of eucalypt forest.

Mt Kaputar National Park: The Summit

Mt Kaputar National Park is a "ecological island" located 25 kilometres east of Narrabri. It is accessible via a road that is sealed for half of its length.

At 1524 metres it is the highest point in Australia west of the Great Dividing Range. From its lofty summit the 360 degree view encompasses one tenth of New South Wales.

The visitor can enjoy eleven marked walking tracks that meander through the park. These revealing a stunning variety of vegetation, animal and bird life to say nothing of the amazing rock formations.

Location (MapArt) 150.183 degrees longitude, -30.331 degrees latitude.

Mt Kaputar National Park: The Sawn Rocks Formation
Sawn Rocks
Sawn Rocks and Waa Gorge at the northern end of the ranges hold some of the most spectacular sights imaginable.

The Sawn Rocks are the weathered remains of the solidified lava core of a volcano. On cooling the basalt forms a curious hexagonal fracture pattern to produce what appears to be a bundle of rock columns.

The creek and ravine area here is a good place to enjoy lunch and explore.

The Giant Australian Telescope

The Australia Telescope Compact Array, part of the Australian Telescope National Facility (ATNF), is located 18 kilometres from Narrabri. It is accessible via a sealed road. There is a very well presented visitors centre with display cases, a theatrette and a souvenir shop.

The telescope is comprised of a number of large parabolic dishes on "railway tracks" that are operated together to give the effect of a much larger radio wave collecting dish that is many kilometers in diameter. This makes the radio pictures of remote galaxies much sharper.

Location (MapArt): 149.565 degrees longitiude , 130.318 latitude.

ATNF also has a Vistors Centre web site with directions on how to get there.
